POV #3
Also, the terms used in describing the things that take place in exploitation and where those things occur are candy-coated. The air brushing covers the extreme violent environment that makes up the sexual industry. The word 'sex worker' has created a controversy: "the term sex worker suggests that prostitution is a reasonable job for poor women, rather than a violation of their human rights," (Farley, 2006). Such terms allow for people to become accustomed to the sexual acts to occur and end up becoming acceptable in society. Words such as 'sex worker' seem to be deemed honorable or dignified enough to not create uproar. However, "one organization even proposed that women’s civil rights would be violated if they were denied the ‘right to work’ as a prostitute," (Farley 2006). On the other hand, many people do not realize that the sexual acts occurring behind closed doors (massage parlors, strip clubs, brothels, escorting headquarters) involve children. Sometimes, not even the men - or Johns - as those men are called, looking to buy sexual entertainment realize this. In the end, men who engage in these illicit industries and figure this ugly truth out usually do not take action against it. Again, this debate might be eliminated if victims of sexual exploitation speak out. This will create awareness on how victims are actually affected and not just how other people might think victims are affected.
