Philosophy of Social Justice
Social justice is taking action towards improving the life of oneself and others whenever one has the chance to fight on injustice. These actions do not have to be as broad as ending world hunger, but they can involve being respectful and expressing self-control. I decided to do my fire project on child trafficking and sexual enslavement. Moreover, I am going on to study chemistry in college. However, just because my career, and therefore my life, will revolve around chemistry, it does not mean that I will ignore other aspects of life’s injustices. When issues so important to me arise, I will fight to resolve them. In this case, I child trafficking and sexual exploitation are
important to me.
John Green wrote: "Life is not a wish granting factory." People are getting hurt and taken advantage of, and those things will keep on occurring, but I believe it is the job of those who have the resources and fortitude to try to lessen the rate of the injustices we see. It is also our job to make other people realize that they too can create a change by standing up to others’ harms.
Social justice is a process. It involves educating yourself in order to identify the problem, setting up a plan and counterargument to prepare yourself for others to try and knock you down, executing your plan, and persevering because you will probably not be successful the first time. On that note, social justice is not marked by success alone. Social justice is marked by continuing the struggle. We have seen people protesting Wall Street for several years now, and even though they have not won the ear, they are advocating for social justice because the protestors are still battling and striving for change. In other words, social justice is advocating for human rights.
